Yay! Finally, after two weeks of work; my first review about a cafe is done! I call this A review, and the idea is that this will be the side of my blog where I do sweet reviews about bakeries, cafes, patisseries, coffee shops and restaurants, and so on. I just want to share my own opinions, experiences and thoughts about the sweet side of the food business in the world, and to give you an insight of what I find worth visiting, eating and so on. Because I live in Sweden, most of my reviews will probably be about bakeries, cafes, etc. that are located in Sweden. But if I travel to another country, I sure will write about my visit. Enjoy!

This is one of my favorite cafes here in Kalmar (my home town). It's located in the heart of the city, surrounded by small shopping malls and stores. The building is a charming two storey house from the nineteenth century. There are some interesting history about the building before it became a cafe. It was owned by the well-known siblings Henning and Signe Kullzén (thereafter the name of the cafe). On the first floor they had their stores; the brother had a second-hand bookshop and the sister had a stationery store. Upstairs was the siblings' shared residence. The siblings never got married and they lived here until the end of their lives.

When the siblings passed away in 1980s, it was time for something new - a cafe! And what a great cafe indeed! Today there are still a second-hand bookshop on the first floor and an antique jewelry store next to it. The cafe itself is on the second floor, were the siblings had their private floor.

Very little has changed since the siblings passed away, the building still breaths that old nineteenth century spirit. The atmosphere of an old home from the turn of the century have been created by tables, lamps, carpets, chairs, couches, mirrors, crystal chandeliers and other furniture's from antique shops and auctions. Even the wallpapers and the tile stoves are from the same age! Besides the wonderful interior, the cafe offers a delicious variety of sandwiches, sweet pastries, muffins, pies, cookies, cold and hot drinks. The cafe are famous for its fruit crumble pies that can be served with whipped cream, vanilla custard or ice cream. If you are vegetarian, lactose or gluten intolerant, you can also find something good to eat here. You can have your bread for your sandwich gluten free (just ask for it) and they use lactose free margarine on their sandwiches as well. They bake mainly everything themselves and the vegetables on the sandwiches are mostly organic.

Their selection is very traditional Swedish, I must say. Such as cinnamon rolls, kladdkaka (sticky chocolate cake; almost like brownies), Danish pastry (puff pastry with fillings), biskvier (almost like Sarah Bernard's) and chokladbollar (chocolate confectionary with a taste of coffee and coconut). You can find these pastries in almost every cafe, coffee shop or bakery in Sweden. (Please see the pictures above and below for more info.)

During the summer, the cafe also have an outdoor dining. It's so relaxing to watch the street life of Kalmar while you're enjoying your coffee and pastry, or whatever you are drinking or eating. So if you for some reason visit Kalmar here in Sweden, you really must visit this wonderful cafe! Visit the cafes official site here (it's in Swedish, though).

HILDA'S
BAKING TIPS

HILDA'S
BAKING TIPS

#1

If possible, try to weigh your ingredients instead of measuring them. A small kitchen scale is great investment for a better baking result!

#2

Always sift your cacao, flour, baking powder and other dry ingredients to avoid clumps in your batter or dough.

#3

Grease and flour your baking diches and tins to avoid problems. Both the bottom and the sides. You can also line them with parchment paper.

#4

Use ingredients that are brought to room temperture for best result. Place all of the ingredients on the kitchen counter for a hour or two before you start baking.
